Costa de Cuba, 1839. Dezenas de escravos negros se libertam das correntes e assumem o comando do navio negreiro La Amistad. Synopsis and details

Costa de Cuba, 1839. Dozens of black slaves free themselves from the chains and take command of the slave ship La Amistad. They dream to return to Africa, but unaware navigation and are forced to rely on two crew survivors who deceive them and make, after two months, is captured by an American ship, when inordinately sailed up the coast of Connecticut. Africans are initially judged by the murder of the crew, but the case takes shape and U.S. President Martin Van Buren (Nigel Hawthorn), who longs to be reelected, try the condemnation of slavery, because to please southern states and also strengthen ties with Spain because the young Queen Isabella II (Anna Paquin) argues that both the slaves and the ship are his and should be returned. But the abolitionists win, and yet the government appeals and the cause is the U.S. Supreme Court. This painting is the former president John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins), a non-abolitionist assumed, out of his voluntary retirement to defend the Africans.
